Slammers Maximum Jive Band [Live] - Hey There You (review)

Slammers Maximum Jive Band Hey There You

Slammers Maximum Jive Band [Live] - Hey There You (Self-Released; CD002)

Some bands are great in the studio. Some shine onstage. The Slammers Maximum Jive Band rocks both. After releasing a truly brilliant studio album earlier this year (the appropriately titled Jive Time), The Slammers return with Hey There You, an absolutely killer live recording… READ MORE

Judy Garland - Garland At The Grove (review)

Judy Garland At The Grove review

Judy Garland - Garland At The Grove (DRG; 19107)

Garland At The Grove — the phrase is pure magic. DRG’s reissue of Judy Garland’s amazing 1959 live LP adds 3 new tracks, the previously omitted “Day In - Day Out,” “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” and “Do It Again.” Garland’s renditions of all these songs are, not unexpectedly, exquisite. Johnny Mercer’s “Day In - Day Out” lyrics could not have a better friend than Garland. Her delivery is powerful, of course, but also affecting. Building and building, she winds up the song with a fabulous emotional crescendo. Her tender reading of “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” tugs at the heart gently. Every time she says baby, it’s like a loving caress. “Do It Again” is another shot of romance, swaying like a palm tree in a warm island breeze… READ MORE

Retro Review: Bobby Darin - Mack is Back DVD

    Bobby Darin Mack Is Back

Bobby Darin - Mack is Back DVD (Questar; QD3180)

One of the earliest Bobby Darin DVDs ever released and still the best, Mack is Back showcases the many talents of the great Mr. Darin beautifully. The centerpiece of this disc is essentially a concert; an uncut version of the final episode of Darin’s 1972-73 TV variety series. This would also be the last time Darin stepped in front of a camera before his passing late in 1973, and so it has a unique resonance… READ MORE

Tony Perkins - The Prettiest Girl In School (review)

Tony Perkins The Prettiest Girl In School

Tony Perkins - The Prettiest Girl In School (El; ACMEM135CD)

Before Norman Bates, before the international acclaim Anthony Perkins received for his lead role in Alfred Hitchcock’s groundbreaking thriller Psycho, there was a young man named Tony Perkins who fancied himself a crooner. In 1956 and 1957, this callow youth recorded more than two dozen sides for the RCA and Epic labels, and scored a Top 30 hit with “Moonlight Swim.” Mixing light teen pop and adult standards, The Man Who Would Be Bates demonstrated a significant talent for song… READ MORE

Bobby Darin - Early Bobby Darin (review)

    Bobby Darin Early Bobby Darin

Bobby Darin - Early Bobby Darin (El Toro; ETCD1018)

Bobby Darin fans have been waiting a long time for these recordings to debut on CD. Previously only available on a rare, out-of-print MCA cassette, Darin’s 1956 and 1957 Decca sides offer a fascinating glimpse into the development of the legendary performer’s unique style. El Toro’s decision to couple Darin’s 8 Decca sides with 9 early Atco tracks is a brilliant one. Taken together, the Decca and Atco work represent a revealing portrait of the artist as a young man… READ MORE

Bobby Darin - Sings the Shadow of Your Smile / In A Broadway Bag (review)

Bobby Darin Sings The Shadow of Your Smile In A Broadway Bag

Bobby Darin - Sings the Shadow of Your Smile / In A Broadway Bag (Edsel; EDSS 1012)

The first disc in the UK-based Edsel label’s four volume Bobby Darin reissue series features the classic 1966 LPs Sings The Shadow Of Your Smile and In A Broadway Bag. These albums signaled Darin’s return to Atlantic Records after a 7-album stint at Capitol.

A desire for more creative control has been cited by many sources as a leading reason for Darin’s original departure from Atlantic, so it should come as no surprise that Sings The Shadow Of Your Smile finds Mr. Darin sitting in the producer’s chair. With an artist of such fine taste and talent at the helm, the result is pure magic… READ MORE
